A product of more than a year of planning, the Milky Way photo showcased here was still mere luck. The original plan(s) was not to take the photo from the Big Oak Flat Road. Rather, it was to take the photo from either the Sentinel Dome or Olmsted Point – neither of which happened. The Sentinel Dome summit photo, with the fallen Jeffrey pine in the foreground was aborted because I was told there were bears see on the trail leading down and the weather got much colder than I was prepared for. The Olmsted Point photo never happened because I caught the Milky Way, pictured here, with my naked eyes and knew instantly I couldn’t bet on a better view driving another 1.5 hours away from Yosemite valley. Nevertheless, it turned out to be easily my favorite photo I’ve ever taken.
